Goals of Ayurveda
Ayurveda has 2 major goals viz Swasthasya swasthya samrakshana (preservation including promotion of health in the healthy) and Aturasyaroga prashamana (alleviation of illness in the sick and prevention of illness) . In order to achieve the first goal, emphasis is laid on the practice of certain procedures, which are closely related to ones biological needs, personal hygiene, social behaviour, positive emotions and code of conduct. These are well documented in the classics under dinacharya (daily ritucharya (seasonal/regimen)/sadvrita (code of conduct/moral code), dharaneeya and adhraheeya vega (negative emotions that are to be contained and 14 biological urges which are not to be suppressed), importance of maintaining the purity of air, water, soil and season etc for preventing epidemics and endemics etc. The second goal relating to the disease management and prevention have been dealt with in great detail in a number of chapters in the classics mainly in nidanasthana (section of diagnosis) and chikitsasthana (section on therapeutics) dealing with rasayana (rejuvenation), Vajeekarana (vilification) including panchakarma (the 5 cleansing procedures various diseases, their actiology(nidana)/ prodromal clinical presentation (poorvaroopa),cardinal signs and symptoms(roopa) therapeutic tests(upashayanupashaya);differential diagnosis(sapekshanidana) mechanism of disease manifestation (samprapti), disease types (bheda) and principle of treatment (chikitsa).
