Khandige’s first certified organic plantation measuring 107 acres is located in Shedimane, a small town close to Agumbe in the Western Gates, situated at an altitude of about 249 m above sea level. The estate is spread across the hill sides and receives very heavy rainfall from June to September measuring 2500 mm a year, the summers are hot with temperatures between 30-35 degree Celsius and the winters are cold with temperatures ranging from 18-20 degree Celsius. This region is famous for its rich tropical evergreen fruit, which surround the farm. It is also home for the King Cobra, gaur, leopard, wild dogs apart from hornbills, peacocks, great barking deer, giant flying squirrel, macaque, babbler, barbet, blue jay, weaverbird, yellow lion ringed krait and other rare birds. We grow vanilla, cashew, spices like nutmeg, pepper etc. Rare trees include like wild jack (Artocarpus hirsutus), tellicherry bark (Holarrhena antidysenterica), flowering-murdah (Terminalia paniculata), tooth-ache tree (Zanthoxylum armatum), Salacia oblonga, Myristica dactyloides, Garcinia gummi-gutta, Adenia hondala and Persia macrantha. |
