While the Green Revolution between 1967 and 1978 definitely increased India's total grain output to record heights, it also made farming an expensive proposition. Crop rotation meant that the natural monsoon had to be supplemented with artificial irrigation, use of high yield value seeds merited the use of modern methods and expensive chemical fertilizers, which only served to further deplete the soil and create the need for high quality soil inputs. Furthermore high yield value seeds are more prone to attack by pests and hence demand the use of expensive chemical pesticides on a regular basis. All this has added to the cost of farming in India and as a result farmers are teetering under an ever-increasing burden of debt.

Natural Farming or Do Nothing Farming is in complete paradox to the tenets of Green Revolution. Professed by a famous natural farming guru Masanobu Fukuoka, it believes that man's attempt to dissect and demystify nature and exploit natural resources and advance human culture often at the cost of the ecology has only estranged him from the true revelation and understanding of God and Man as one with nature. The principle advice is to go along with nature and not against. This will ensure a viable future for our children.
